An exceptionally handsome and modern multi-purpose arena is being developed at the heart of Finland’s famous ice hockey city, Tampere. A vision plan made by an American architect Daniel Libeskind was published in November 2010. The bold plan creates a unique environment and a totally new city district to Tampere.
The Deck and Tampere Central Arena will be built above the train tracks south of the train station. This new area is integrated naturally to the surrounding city centre, while it connects together existing city districts, now divided by the railway.
The deck and arena will also include commercial space forshops and restaurants. Offices, business premises, hotel rooms and apartments with a total volume of 60 000 sqm will be built on top of the railroad. Total volume of the arena is almost 50 000 sqm and it has seats for about 11 000 spectators.
Most of the arena’s facilities are used and open for public also outside the time of events. In addition to the ice hockey games, the arena is a venue for a wide variety of events, for example world-class concerts.
The fact that the deck and arena will be built on top of the train tracks is challenging. There is only limited experience available from similar projects. The traffic on this main railway line will continue during the whole project and is setting tight limitations to the construction works.
The development is a co-operation of Tampere Central Arena Ltd, the City of Tampere and NCC. Collaboration with adjacent companies, housing companies and real estate companies will be essential. The project will employ a significant number of people. The project is now on planning stage with aim to be ready for the ice hockey world championships in 2013 arranged by Sweden and Finland.
